Volkswagen Amarok Engines, Oil Type & Service Notes

The 2010–2016 Amarok was commonly sold in the UK with 2.0 TDI and 2.0 BiTDI diesel engines. From 2016, the Amarok moved heavily towards the 3.0 V6 TDI diesel engine, while the 2023 onwards Amarok introduced a new-generation platform with engine availability depending on market and model.

Most diesel Amarok models commonly require a Volkswagen-approved low-ash oil, often to VW 507.00 specification, but this should always be confirmed by VIN, engine code or the vehicle handbook before servicing.

Amarok Suspension, 4Motion System & Load Carrying

The 2010–2022 Amarok uses independent front suspension with a rear leaf-spring live axle. Depending on model, it was available with selectable 4Motion four-wheel drive with low range, or permanent 4Motion with a Torsen-style centre differential.

Suspension choice is important because the Amarok is often modified with canopies, roof tents, drawer systems, winch bumpers, tools and towing equipment. A suspension kit should be matched to the real load on the vehicle, not just the desired ride height.

The Amarok is a strong platform for roof rack systems, work lighting, recovery boards, awnings and touring equipment. Roof load ratings vary by generation, rack system and whether the vehicle is moving or static, so the rack, tent and load should be treated as a complete system.

For overland use, many owners choose either a cab roof rack or a bed/canopy rack. A bed-mounted tent setup can keep weight lower and often makes more sense for larger tents or heavier camping equipment.

Payload, Canopies, Bed Racks & Storage

The Amarok load bed is central to the vehicle’s appeal. Depending on model and trim, payload can reach over one tonne, making the vehicle suitable for tools, recovery kit, camping gear, drawer systems, commercial equipment and fleet use.

Canopies, bed racks and drawer systems should be chosen alongside suspension, because permanent rear weight changes how the vehicle sits, handles and brakes. For touring builds, a bed rack or canopy rack can also be a sensible place to carry a roof tent.

Wheels, Tyres, PCD, Centre Bore & Torque Settings

Factory Amarok wheel sizes include 16, 17, 18 and larger alloy options depending on generation and trim. The 2010–2022 Amarok commonly uses 5x120 PCD with a 65.1mm centre bore. The 2023 onwards Amarok uses a different Ranger-based wheel fitment, so it should not be treated the same as the earlier vehicle.

Wheel choice affects tyre availability, brake clearance, offset, arch clearance and load rating. For off-road or commercial use, steel wheels are often chosen for strength, simplicity and tyre choice.

Front Bumpers, Winch Mounts & Recovery Points

For off-road work, recovery points and winch mounting should be treated as safety-critical parts. The Amarok has been crash tested in different generations and markets, so front-end upgrades should be chosen carefully and fitted correctly.

The 2010–2022 Amarok is commonly listed with a wading depth of around 500mm. The 2023 onwards Amarok is listed with a higher wading depth of up to around 800mm on suitable models.

Real-world wading depends on water depth, speed, bow wave, breathers, seals and vehicle preparation. A snorkel or raised air intake does not make a vehicle waterproof, but it can move the air intake to a better location for dusty tracks, wet worksites and off-road travel.

Chassis, Dimensions & Under Vehicle Protection

The Amarok uses a ladder-frame chassis with strong towing and load-carrying ability. When used off-road, the sump, gearbox, transfer case, fuel tank and lower suspension areas can be exposed to rocks, ruts and site damage.
