What does a 4x4 snorkel do?

A vehicle snorkel relocates the engine’s air intake from its original position, usually inside a front wing or behind the grille, to a higher point near roof level. The snorkel body connects to the vehicle’s existing air cleaner through vehicle-specific ducting.

Raising the intake can reduce exposure to water, dust and debris encountered close to the road or track surface. Safari describes its systems as supplying a large volume of cool, clean air to the standard air cleaner, while Bravo produces vehicle-specific raised air intake kits for a wide range of 4x4s and commercial vehicles.

A snorkel is not a stand-alone guarantee that a vehicle can safely drive through deep water. The complete intake must be sealed correctly, and the vehicle’s manufacturer wading limit, electrical systems, breathers, cooling fan, door seals and recovery plan must all be considered.

A properly designed and installed snorkel can support vehicles used in wet, dusty and demanding environments, but its value depends on the route, vehicle and quality of the complete installation.

Moving the intake higher can reduce the chance of water reaching the engine intake when the vehicle is operated within its approved limits.

A roof-level intake is often positioned above the densest dust generated around the wheels and lower bodywork.

Water Protection

A raised intake does not increase every vehicle limit

Water entering a running engine can cause severe damage because liquid cannot be compressed in the same way as air. A snorkel raises the intake opening, but the entire path from the snorkel head to the air cleaner and engine must remain sealed.

The vehicle’s published wading depth still accounts for far more than the engine intake. Axles, gearboxes, transfer cases, electrical connectors, control modules, cooling fans and cabin sealing may all limit safe depth or duration.

Before entering water, assess depth, current, surface, entry and exit points. Never use a snorkel as justification for entering water that is fast-moving, unknown or beyond the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.

A snorkel does not make a vehicle waterproof

Always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s wading instructions. Confirm that the intake installation is sealed and inspect the route before committing to a crossing.

The intake is only one part of the vehicle. Water-crossing preparation should consider the complete mechanical and electrical system.

Intake sealing

All joints, ducts, air-box connections and drain points must be checked and sealed as required by the fitting instructions.

Axle, gearbox and transfer-case breathers may require inspection or extension for repeated water use.

Electrical components

Low-mounted control units, connectors, alternators and other electrical equipment can remain vulnerable.

Cooling fan

A snorkel does not replace the air filter

Most vehicle-specific snorkel installations require drilling or cutting the outer wing and fitting brackets to the A-pillar. Accurate template positioning is essential because the body, ducting and fasteners must align without placing the snorkel under stress.

The installer must connect the snorkel to the original air cleaner using the supplied components and seal every relevant joint. Existing intake drains or openings may need to be sealed or modified exactly as directed by the kit instructions.

Care and Inspection

Looking after a raised air intake

A moulded snorkel is generally low-maintenance, but it remains exposed to branches, vibration, ultraviolet light, road salt and workshop activity. Inspect it periodically and after any impact.

Check the snorkel head, body, pillar bracket, wing fixings, ducting and air-box joints. Loose fixings, damaged seals or split ducting can compromise the installation even when the outside still appears intact.

The air filter should be inspected after dusty trips and any event where water may have reached the intake. Follow the maintenance instructions for the vehicle, snorkel and filter.

Is a snorkel only useful for driving through water?
